Overview

Histology studies the morphology of tissues, and the cells that compose them, both from a morphological and functional point of view. An essential tool for histology is the microscope, which allows direct observation of the tissues to be studied. For this observation to be possible, however, these must be worked and treated in various ways: they must be cut into very thin strips, so that they can be observed against the light, they must be colored in various ways, so as to be more easily recognizable and distinguishable, and they must finally be treated in such a way as to prevent their decomposition and allow their conservation for subsequent analyzes.

The Histology Facility is equipped with the following instruments:

  1. – Leica ASP300S tissue processor (1)
  2. – Leica RM2245 semi-motorised microtome (1)
  3. – Leica parafin embedding station EG1150H + EG1150C cold plate (1)
  4. – Nikon Eclipse dual head microscope with DS camera (2)
  5. – Leica Vibratome VT1000S (1)
  6. – Thermofisher Heratherm oven (1)
  7. – KD-P water bath e hot plate (2)
  8. – Zeiss PALM laser capture microdissector (1)
  9. – Leica CM1860 Cryostas (2)

Leica ASP300S tissue processor.

Leica ASP300S tissue processor allows the operator-independent paraffin embedding of hundreds of histological samples, ensuring consistency and preservation of tissue’s histological features, along with elevated safety standards.

Leica RM2245 semi-motorised microtome.

RM2245 is a motorized microtome for routine sectioning of histological specimen.

Leica EG1150 embedding station and cold plate.

Leica EG1150 working station is composed by a cold plate for paraffin solidification and a warm-paraffin dispenser. The two units are independent and allow the operator to use significant flexibility.

Nikon Eclipse dual head microscope with DS camera.

Microscope designs for histological examination of tissue specimen by multiple operators. It is equipped with a Canon camera for picture acquisition.

Leica Vibratome VT1000.

Microtome with a vibrating blade, designed for the sectioning of live brain sections.

Thermo Fisher Heratherm oven.

For rapid sample drying. Energy efficient.

ZEISS PALM laser capture microdissector.

Zeiss PALM laser capture microdissector allows the isolation of operator-defined areas in the tissue for the recovery of DNA, RNA and proteins. Compatible with NGS and proteomic technologies.

The instrument has a 20‐30 μm2 resolution, and guarantees a precision of 1.5 μm.

KD-P water bath and hot plate.

Quick heating, long lifespan and energy saving, due to the use of a new-type heating element; Both actual and preset temperatures are displayed; Automatic memory and restoration functions: After startup, all preset temperature data are automatically stored in the system; Special black surface material characterized by its strong resistance to abrasion and corrosion.
