Roberto Zoncu is a Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Pisa, Italy, where he completed his thesis on the mechanisms of asymmetric stem cell division during brain development. He subsequently obtained his Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the Yale School of Medicine, focusing on endocytic vesicle trafficking and maturation. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Whitehead Institute/MIT, where he studied how lysosomes regulate the activity of the mTORC1 kinase, he joined the UC Berkeley faculty in 2014.
His current research explores the role of lysosomes as metabolic command centers, investigating how these organelles sense and transmit nutrient signals to regulate cell growth and homeostasis. The Zoncu Lab employs advanced microscopy, in vitro biochemical assays, and high-throughput profiling techniques to uncover new properties of lysosomes, with the goal of developing innovative therapies for diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.
