Maurizio Corbetta studies how the brain connects and adapts after a stroke, with the goal of helping patients regain autonomy and quality of life. He founded the Padova Neuroscience Center, collaborates with research centers worldwide, and has been awarded prestigious grants to develop new treatment approaches for brain disorders. His research combines brain imaging, computational modeling, and clinical studies to better understand how the mind works and how neurological damage can be repaired.
Maurizio Corbetta’s research has profoundly changed the way we study the brain. He was among the first to demonstrate that even at rest, the brain maintains a precise organization composed of “networks” that control cognitive functions. He introduced new ideas to explain why, after a stroke, some functions are impaired even in brain regions not directly affected by the lesion.
At VIMM, his group combines advanced brain imaging techniques (such as MRI and EEG), cognitive testing, computational models, and non-invasive stimulation to study how the brain recovers and to develop personalized therapies. He coordinates major European projects aimed at creating “digital twins” of the brain — tools that will help design more accurate, tailored treatments for each patient.
