Principal Investigator

Luca Scorrano is a pioneer in the study of mitochondrial dynamics. His research has redefined fundamental concepts in mitochondrial biology and apoptosis, introducing the role of an important protein called OPA1 in modulating the morphology of mitochondrial cristae. With a translational vision, his laboratory explores how mitochondrial shape influences health, disease, and therapeutic response, with significant implications in fields such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and metabolism.

Luca Scorrano’s research has revolutionized knowledge about mitochondria, the “powerhouses” of the cell. He has shown how their internal shape controls energy production, the ability of cells to survive or die, and their response to damage. He discovered the fundamental role of a protein called OPA1, which helps mitochondria defend and adapt themselves in cases of stress or disease. His group has also studied how mitochondria communicate with other parts of the cell, contributing to a better understanding of many vital processes. Today, he focuses on finding new therapies for mitochondrial diseases, cancer, and cellular aging, supported by major European and national grants.
