Fred Gage is a Professor in the Laboratory of Genetics and holds the Vi and John Adler Chair for Research on Age-Related Neurodegenerative Disease at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. He earned his degree from the University of Florida and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. After serving as a Professor of Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego, he joined the Salk Institute in 1995. His research focuses on the plasticity and adaptability of the adult central nervous system, with particular attention to neurogenesis in the adult human hippocampus. Gage’s laboratory has demonstrated that physical exercise and environmental enrichment can stimulate the growth of new neurons, offering new perspectives for treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and for recovery from spinal cord injuries. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
