Alessandro Carrer leads a laboratory that investigates how cellular metabolism and the mechanisms controlling gene activity (epigenetics) influence cancer development. During his studies, he identified how certain key metabolites (such as acetyl-CoA) can promote tumor growth, particularly in the pancreas. His research shows how metabolic changes can make cancer cells more “plastic” and resistant, paving the way for new targeted therapies.
The laboratory of Alessandro Carrer focuses on how intracellular metabolites, particularly acetyl-CoA and derivatives of the mevalonate pathway, influence epigenetics and cellular plasticity in pathological contexts. He has demonstrated that the production and utilization of acetyl-CoA modulate the activity of acetyltransferases, with direct effects on histone acetylation and gene regulation in various tissues, including the pancreas and muscle. By employing murine models and advanced metabolomic, genetic editing, and epigenomic techniques, his group investigates the mechanisms underlying pancreatic carcinoma initiation and the links between diet, metabolism, and cancer risk. His studies have already led to the identification of new therapeutic targets and the development of innovative preclinical models.
